Definition: “Specialised field of Dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and non surgical management of maxillofacial pathology and orofacial pain including salivary gland disease and movement disorders” Aim: The aim of the MEDNET.NET.AU Oral Medicine service is to provide online based support to clinicians in the form of an opinion based on information provided . This service aims to provide support to practitioners especially in remote areas of Australia and New Zealand

Dr Ajith Polonowita (2010) Graduated from dentistry with a BDS from the University of Otago, School of Dentistry, New Zealand. After experience as a house Surgeon in a maxillofacial unit and clinical tutoring at the school of dentistry moved to Australia to private practice in Victoria. Further specialist qualification was gained at the university of Melbourne, graduating with and MDSc in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology in 2001. MRACDS was gained in 2008. Currently Dr A D Polonowita works between Australia and New Zealand on a monthly basis; he is the specialist consultant in oral medicine for Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) as well as providing the private specialist service for Canterbury in New Zealand. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer for the University of Otago and external examiner. Within Australia Dr A D Polonowita manages two general dental practices in country Victoria and is the Academic Lead for undergraduate teaching at La Trobe University School of Dentistry and Oral Health. Dr A D Polonowita is the Vice President of the Oral Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (OMSANZ) and Committee member of continuing education for the Australasian Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM). He is also a member of the Australia and New Zealand Academy Orofacial Pain (ANZAOP). He is a Paul Harris Fellow and has many other interests outside of specialist dentistry, including charity work. |
